The Gaja family settled in the Piedmont region in northwestern Italy during the 17th century. It was Giovanni Gaja, the great-grandfather of the present owner, who established the winery in the Langhe hills of Piedmont in 1859.
In 1995, Gaja acquired a second estate in Barolo's La Morra municipality, mostly within the renowned cru of Cerequio. The wine, Conteisa, gets its name from a Piedmontese term for "dispute," due to its location between two municipalities historically vying for control of this coveted vineyard. Known for elegance, Conteisa is a powerful Barolo with structural appeal, catering to those seeking the region's classic traits.
